I often borrow a Sigma 8-16mm lens and use it in manual focus. When I give it back, I sometimes forget to switch the lens back to AF, and the next user may not notice right away. On a Canon 7D, is there any setting or warning that tells you the lens itself is in manual-focus mode before shooting?

Why don't you set the mode to be manual focus and put a colored tape over the AF/MF button while you are using it and so when you return the lens, the tape will be an in your face reminder to change it back to Auto Focus mode.
