Canon EOS 1000D shows Err 01 and autofocus through the viewfinder no longer works

My Canon EOS 1000D displayed “Err 01: Communications between the camera and lens is faulty. Clean the lens contacts.” Power cycling didn’t help. Removing the battery would clear it temporarily, but the error came back when shooting. After repeating this a few times, the error stopped appearing, but now the camera will not take a photo when using normal autofocus through the viewfinder. In manual focus it will shoot, and autofocus still works in Live View. What is the likely cause, and what should I try next?

This error usually show up when there is faulty connection between camera and lens. This fault is because of those copper connections on camera or lens or both. Almost all Canon's camera shows this error in similar conditions.

Have a look,

In short, the solution is:

  1. Clean the camera and lens contacts and try again.
  2. Get it repaired by Canon's service center or open it and clean / fix it yourself.

Err 01 on Canon DSLRs usually means the camera and lens are not communicating reliably through the electrical contacts. The first thing to try is cleaning the metal contacts on both the lens and camera mount, then reseating the lens and testing again.

Because Live View autofocus still works but phase-detect autofocus through the viewfinder does not, the problem may still be lens-related rather than the body. A failing internal lens connection, such as a damaged ribbon cable, can cause intermittent communication errors and odd AF behavior.

Best next steps:

  1. Clean the lens and camera contacts carefully.
  2. Test the camera with a different lens.
  3. Test your lens on another compatible Canon body, if possible.

If the issue only happens with one lens, that lens likely needs repair. If it happens with multiple lenses, the camera body may need service. If cleaning doesn’t resolve it, professional repair is the likely fix.
