The Nikon FG-20 SLR camera was first introduced in 1984 by Nippon Kogaku K. K., which was a predecessor of Nikon Corporation. The camera counted as a successor to the EM and FG cameras. This camera comes with a 50mm f/1.8 Series E lens. You can also attach other F-mount lenses to this Nikon SLR camera. The camera employs the center-weighted TTL metering system for exposure adjustment. This camera includes two exposure modes namely, aperture priority and manual. It provides a working range of EV 1 and EV 18 at ISO 100 with a 50mm f/1.4 lens. The ISO sensitivity can be set from 25–3200 and shutter speed to a maximum limit of 1/1000th of a second. The camera comes with a standard ISO-type hot shoe that accepts electronic flash devices.
Optics and Focus
The Nikon 50mm f/1.8 Series E lens, which is provided with the camera, has an optical design of 6 elements in 5 groups. These elements are multi-coated to reduce reflections. The manual focus system can be used to take pictures of objects from a minimum distance of 0.6 m. The 7-blade diaphragm creates a nearly-rounded bokeh in the background. This camera uses the center-weighted full-aperture TTL metering to provide a working range of EV 1 and EV 18 at ISO 100. The Nikon FG-20 SLR includes two exposure modes, of these the aperture-priority mode keeps the diaphragm blades locked in the current setting while adjusting the shutter speed.
Sensor and Screen
The fixed eye-level pentaprism viewfinder provides 0.86× magnification with the 50mm lens. It also covers 92% of the frame. You can reference the matte Fresnel focusing screen, which has a split-image rangefinder spot with a microprism collar during the focusing operation. The viewfinder has camera-related information given at the ride side, which includes shutter speed, under and over and underexposure warning zones, and the flash ready indication.
Image and Video
This Nikon SLR works with 35mm film negatives. Use the single stroke advance lever to wind the film. You can wound the film in a single stroke or a series of strokes with 144° advance angle. For the automatic winding operation, you can use the optional Motor Drive MD-14 or MD-E.
Other Features
The standard ISO-type hot shoe is provided to mount electronic flash units. After connecting the flash to the camera, it gets synchronized with the shutter at 1/90th of a second automatically. The self-timer lets you delay the shutter release by 10 seconds. You can cancel the self-timer by slowly returning the timer lever to its original position. A memo holder is provided at the rear, which can be used to keep current film information as a reminder. The camera runs on two 1.55V silver oxide or alkaline-manganese batteries or by a single 3V lithium battery.
