The Nikon FG SLR camera lets you relive the uniqueness of film photography while offering automatic exposure mode to simplify the entire photo capture process. This camera comes with a 50mm f/2 AI lens. You may also mount other AI lenses to this Nikon SLR camera. The camera uses the center-weighted TTL metering system for exposure adjustment. The camera includes three exposure modes, the program auto, and shutter priority. A working range of EV 1 and EV 18 is provided at ISO 100 with a 50mm f/1.4 lens. This camera has an ISO sensitivity range of 12–5000 and a maximum shutter speed of 1/1000th of a second. The camera has an ISO-type hot shoe that can connect the SB-15 or other Nikon speedlights directly.
Optics and Focus
The 50mm f/2 AI lens, which is provided with the camera, includes 6 elements in 4 groups. It has a manual focus system that allows you to click photos of objects from a minimum distance of 0.6 m. The 6 aperture blades create an almost-rounded bokeh in the background. This camera employs the center-weighted full-aperture TTL metering with a silicon photodiode. It provides a working range of EV 1 and EV 18 at ISO 100. The Nikon FG SLR comes with two exposure modes, one of which is based on aperture priority, and the other adjusts both shutter and aperture to get the right exposure in the scene.
Sensor and Screen
The camera has a fixed eye-level pentaprism viewfinder that houses the TTL exposure meter. It provides 0.84× magnification with the 50mm lens and 92% screen coverage. The Nikon standard K focusing screen has a split-image rangefinder spot with a micro-prism collar and matte Fresnel outer field. In the viewfinder, you get to see the shutter speed, exposure warning, and the flash ready indication.
Image and Video
The camera can take pictures with 35mm film negatives. You have to advance the film by winding the lever manually. The film wind lever has a 144° throw and can be used in one continuous single stroke or series of short strokes. You may attach the optional motor drive MD-14 or MD-E for the automatic winding operation.
Other Features
The camera has an ISO shoe that can mount various Nikon speedlight flashes such as the SB-15 for facilitating night-time or indoor photography. When the flash is attached to the camera, it automatically synchronizes with the shutter at 1/90th of a second. By using the self-timer, you may delay the camera's shutter release up to 10 seconds. Also, the self-timer can be canceled by returning the timer lever to its original position. You may keep the information related to current film in the rear memo holder. The camera can be powered by using either two 1.55V silver oxide, 1.5V alkaline-manganese or one 3V lithium battery.
