The Canon Elan II is a 35mm SLR camera with autofocus and autoexposure capabilities. This camera comes with the 28–80mm F3.5–5.6 IV USM lens. The exposure metering is done through-the-lens at maximum aperture with a 6-zone silicon photocell. There are up to 7 autoexposure modes and a single manual mode. With the optical viewfinder, you get frame coverage of 90% and 92% on the vertical and horizontal axis. The autofocus system is handled by the TTL-CT-SIR with BASIS. Also, an AF-assist beam is integrated into the camera design to aid you in low-contrast scenes. Use the hot shoe to attach an external flash to the camera. You can assign 10 most used camera functions to dedicated buttons for quick access. The camera runs on a single 2CR5 lithium battery.
Optics and Focus
The 28–80mm F3.5–5.6 IV USM lens includes 10 optical elements in 10 groups. It gives 75.3–30.2° angle of view. The micro USM AF system makes the lens focus down to a distance of 0.38 m while remaining silent. You can stopped-down the aperture from 22 to 32. The lens has a 5-blade diaphragm and 58mm filter thread. The camera comes with the TTL-CT-SIR AF control system with multiple Base-Stored Image Sensors. You can choose the One-Shot Servo AF for capturing photos of stationary objects and AI Servo AF for moving subjects. The camera has a maximum ISO limit of 6400 and a fast shutter speed of up to 1/4000th of a second. This camera offers three exposure metering patterns, namely evaluative, partial, and center-weighted average.
Sensor and Screen
The Canon Elan II has a fixed eye-level viewfinder with 0.71× magnification and frame coverage of 90% and 92% on the vertical and horizontal axis. Also, the diopter is set to -1 dpt and has a 19.5mm eye relief. An LCD panel is also provided on top, which shows the shutter speed, aperture value, film speed, exposure compensation, battery level, and other camera-related information.
Image and Video
The camera uses 35m film rolls to take pictures. When you load the film and close the back, the camera sets the film automatically to the first frame. Thanks to the automatic film advance, the camera offers continuous shooting to take burst exposures of a fast-paced event. The camera rewinds the film at the end of the roll. You can set the camera to take up to 9 exposures on a single frame. The autobracketing feature captures three consecutive frames with different exposures.
Other Features
This camera has a built-in flash with a guide no. of 13 m at ISO 100. It offers a recycle time of approximately 2 seconds and coverage of a 28mm lens. The hot shoe can mount electronic flash units. You can synchronize the mounted flash to the shutter speed at 1/125th of a second in the Tv and manual exposure modes. There are 10 custom functions, to which you can assign your preferred camera settings.
