The Canon AE-1 Program SLR camera with 50mm f/3.5 Macro Lens is one of the brand’s first SLR cameras to be equipped with a microprocessor. This camera can also be used with other lenses having an FD mount. It has a manual exposure metering based on both shutter priority and program AE. The camera has an ISO range of up to 3200 and a maximum shutter speed of 1/1000th of a second. A manual focusing system is incorporated into the camera along with a Depth-of-Field preview button. A dedicated hot shoe is included for attaching an external flash. Other features in the camera include an auto-exposure lock, self-timer, PC-sync terminal, and a body grip.
Optics and Focus
The Canon AE-1 Program SLR comes with a Canon FD 50mm f/3.5 macro lens. The lens has an optical design of six elements arranged in four groups. It offers manual focus that can be used for capturing images of objects that are at a minimum distance of 0.23 m. The wide focal length of 50mm gives you a human eye view when analyzing scenes. The camera uses manual exposure metering that is based on aperture priority and program AE. You may use the AE lock switch to adjust the over exposure created by the bright background or by the foreground subject. A rotating dial is provided for allowing to switch between the AE modes. The camera’s shutter speed can be increased up to 1/1000th of a second using the provided rotating dial.
Sensor and Screen
This Canon camera’s viewfinder provides a 94% of screen coverage. Moreover, it uses both microprism and new split rangefinder to determine the focus. The viewfinder also displays other useful information such as aperture, auto-exposure setting, camera shake indicator, flash charge completion, and stopped-down metering index.
Image and Video
This camera from Canon can be used with a 35mm film roll. A frame counter is provided to let you know how many shots are taken. The exposed frame can be winded using the film advance lever. An eyepiece is included in the camera, which provides a diopter adjustment up to -1.
Other Features
A self-timer allows you to set the shutter release for up to 10 seconds. You may also deactivate the self-timer by pressing the battery check button or shifting the main switch to 'L'. You may check whether the depth of field required in the image is correct or not by using the DOF preview button. This camera lets you change focusing mirrors with its interchangeable screen design. A hot shoe is included in the camera for attaching an external flash. The connected flash can be synchronized up to 1/60th of a second. Also, a PC-sync terminal is provided for other non-hot-shoe flash devices. The camera runs on one PX286 battery.
