The latest entry to our Cinema Line, the FX2 delivers newfound versatility by combining the high-quality imagery produced by a full-frame sensor with expressive capabilities modelled on Sony’s flagship VENICE cinema camera, enabling you to bring your creative visions to life through video or photos.
The full-frame FX2 delivers stunning cinematic imagery, blending high resolution with beautiful bokeh. Equipped with a back-illuminated Exmor R® CMOS sensor supported by our BIONZ XR™ image processing engine and advanced AI processing unit, the camera offers high sensitivity, wide latitude, and 33 MP resolution, giving ambitious cinematic visionaries all the tools they need.
The FX2’s full-frame sensor produces footage with smooth, natural gradations thanks to 15+ stops of latitude when recording with S-Log3, ensuring even high-contrast scenes are captured in full detail. Base ISO for S-Log3 capture can be set to 800 or 4000, and the camera supports S-Gamut3/S-Gamut3.Cine color gamuts for broad compatibility. That all adds up to maximum editing efficiency when shooting with multiple cameras.
For creative flexibility, there are three modes available for Log recording — Flexible ISO, Cine EI, and Cine EI Quick — with Cine EI widely used in professional filmmaking for footage shot with post-production in mind. Based on the shooting environment, choose a base ISO of either 800 or 4000 to maintain maximum latitude throughout the shoot, allowing specific tonal ranges to be enhanced in post-production to achieve your desired cinematic look.
7K oversampling is used with full pixel readout and no pixel binning when shooting full-frame 4K (QFHD 3840 x 2160), and 4K 60p (59.94p) recording is available in Super 35mm mode. Professional quality is supported by 10-bit depth, 4:2:2 color sampling, an efficient MPEG-H HEVC/H.265 codec, and Intra recording including DCI-4K (4096 x 2160).
With the FX2, LUTs can be imported and applied to the LCD monitor and the electronic viewfinder while shooting or playing back movies. Up to 16 user LUT files can be imported from memory cards or Sony’s Creators’ Cloud and selected as needed. The LUT used for recording can then be embedded in the video metadata.
Picture Profile presets make it easy to adjust color and gradation to create a variety of moods in camera. These include the acclaimed S-Cinetone, which can help produce beautiful skin tones. Imported user LUTs can be registered as PPLUT 1 to 4 and applied during recording, and an expanded range of 12 Creative Look profiles, including FL2 and FL3, offers a comprehensive selection of visual moods for many recording needs.
Anamorphic lenses are a popular choice for creating a distinctly cinematic look. The FX2 is equipped with a desqueeze display mode that allows monitoring in the standard CinemaScope aspect ratio of 2.93:1 while shooting with anamorphic lenses. It offers 1.3x and 2.0x desqueeze settings, and Sony’s Monitor & Control app provides even more detailed settings for monitoring on a tablet or other external display devices.
An FPS menu inherits features from our professional Cinema Line models, including a [Variable] setting that allows intuitive frame-rate control: up to 2.5x slow motion at 4K resolution, or up to 5x slow motion when recording in Full HD at up to 120 fps.
Combining advanced video functions from our Cinema Line with enhanced options for stills that support filmmaking, the FX2 is designed to handle solo shooting in a wide range of circumstances, giving you maximum flexibility.
Keep focused on shooting even in bright or distracting environments, thanks to an OLED viewfinder with approximately 3.68 million dots. Magnification is 0.70x (50mm lens, infinity focus, -1m-1 diopter), and the angle of view and eyepoint are optimized for video recording. The viewfinder itself can be rotated from 0 ° to +90° for easy viewing at just about any angle, and the eye cup can be removed or reversed left-to-right as necessary.
With an XLR Handle Unit XLR-H1 attached, the FX2 can record high-quality audio via two XLR connectors and a digital audio interface without the need for extra batteries or cables. Microphones equipped with XLR connectors are available separately. Four-channel audio, 24-bit recording, and other settings can be easily applied.
An HDMI Type-A terminal enables 4K 60p (59.94p) 4:2:2 10-bit or 16-bit RAW video output to an external recorder for flexible post-production. 16-bit RAW video is output at 4672 x 2628 resolution (16:9 aspect ratio), which also covers DCI-4K (4096 x 2160), with selectable [59.94p]/[29.97p]/[23.98p]/[24.00p] frame rates. Video output via HDMI can occur simultaneously with proxy recording to an internal memory card.
The camera is equipped with tally lamps on both its front (top) and back. The illuminated REC button also functions as a tally lamp linked to the rear lamp, and a red frame on the LCD monitor acts as another indicator for recording.
