Optics and Focus
The Sigma SA system of the sd Quattro is compatible with a plethora of Sigma's Global Vision lenses. Its electronic contacts communicate with the lens to enable autofocus, image stabilization, and more. The Hybrid AF system comes with both contrast and phase detection points to capture clear images of moving objects. There are up to 9 selectable autofocus points to get critical focus on the desired object. The free move and face detection function also support image capture when tracking a subject. You can use the autofocus in lighting conditions from -1 to 18 EV. Also, the focus peaking function lets you attain accurate focus on the object during manual operation. Both mechanical and electronic shutter options are available in the camera, which can be selected as per the situation requires.
Sensor and Screen
The sd Quattro houses a 29MP APS-C format Foveon X3 Quattro CMOS sensor that provides high-resolution stills having vibrant colors with smooth tonal transitions. Its unique layered design gets rid of the low-pass filter to render 19.6MP lossless compressed RAW images. The pixel ratio of 1:1:4 ensures capture of the full-color information similar to the 39 MP Bayer array. You can frame the shot with the rear LCD of the camera, which has a 1.62m-dot resolution. An adjacent sub monitor is provided to view the exposure settings before taking the picture. The 2.36m-dot electronic viewfinder offers a 1.09× magnification and diopter adjustment of -4 to +2 m.
Image and Video
The Sigma sd Quattro is made keeping aspiring photographers in mind. It takes pictures with a maximum resolution of 5424×3616 pixels. You may choose the JPEG format for easy sharing or RAW for making full use of the camera's dynamic range. The camera has a Super-Fine Detail exposure mode that blends 7 exposures of the same shot to produce a high-resolution RAW file with a wide dynamic range. You can select the aspect ratio from square 1:1 to anamorphic 21:9. The continuous shooting mode of the camera captures up to 14 frames at a speed of 3.6 fps.
Other Features
You can mount an electronic flash on the hot shoe or connect a flash bulb to the PC terminal. Once the flash is linked to the sd Quattro, you can synchronize it with the shutter speed at up to 1/180th of a second. The camera can be triggered remotely by plugging the optional CR-31 cable release switch. Transfer files from the camera in less time with its USB 3.0 port. The camera has a Quick Set button located near the shutter release switch for instant access to the image functions. A lock button is provided to prevent accidental altering of the camera settings. The camera is powered by a BP-61 rechargeable Li-ion battery pack.
