In this workshop we will touch on the works of many of the greats from early on, right up to what is happening today. To gain some practical experience, we will meet in NYC for a day of shooting and discussion. And most importantly, we will meet again the next day to look at our work to find out what worked, what didn't and why. *This excursion is strictly limited to 6 attendees.*
What comes to your mind when you think of street photography? Is it a Garry Winogrand image, or maybe something by Trent Parke? Perhaps it's something completely different. In this workshop we will touch on the works of many of the greats from early on, right up to what is happening today. To gain some practical experience, we will meet in NYC for a day of shooting and discussion. And most importantly, we will meet again the next day to look at our work to find out what worked, what didn't and why.
Some of the more practical topics we would discuss are...
- Lens Selection, focal length, fixed vs zoom, AF vs manual
- Exposure metering; auto vs manual, in camera vs hand held
- Focus; auto or manual
- Approach; ask first, then shoot or shoot first, then ask forgiveness if you have to
At the excursion, I would ask all participants to bring a camera with a fixed wide to normal lens, or a standard zoom; no telephotos as we are not conducting surveillance but trying to make connections. Long lenses remove context, and context is what a street photo is all about. In addition, if anyone owns a hand held incident light meter and could bring it, that would be helpful.
