Why won’t Photoshop open Nikon D7000 .NEF RAW files?

I shot photos on a Nikon D7000 in RAW (.NEF) format and copied them to my computer. When I try to open or drag them into Photoshop, I get an error saying the file is not the right kind of document. I already updated Photoshop, but the error still appears. Do I need a different update or converter to work with D7000 RAW files?

No, you don't need to be nervous yet. You may need either an updated version of Adobe Camera Raw or if an up-to-date enough version isn't available for your camera, then you may have to use Nikon's RAW tools (ViewNX) to do the initial adjustments to your photos. Once you get the photo looking the way you want from the RAW handling software, you can export it as a high quality raster image to be worked on in Photoshop.

Probably not a problem with your photos. Nikon D7000 .NEF files require a version of Adobe Camera Raw that is supported only in newer Photoshop releases. According to the community answers, D7000 RAW support does not work in Photoshop versions earlier than CS5.

So the issue is most likely one of these:

  • Your Photoshop version is too old to support the required Camera Raw update.
  • Camera Raw itself is not updated to a version that supports the D7000.

If your Photoshop version can’t use the needed Camera Raw version, use Nikon’s own RAW software such as ViewNX to open and adjust the files first, then export them as a high-quality image for further editing in Photoshop.

In short: your files are probably fine; the problem is software compatibility, not camera failure.
