Do Nikon D5000 RAW files need converting to DNG before opening in Photoshop?

My Nikon D5000 RAW files are not recognized by Photoshop unless I first convert them to .DNG using Adobe's converter. Is that normal, or should Photoshop be able to open the camera's native RAW files directly?

You should probably update your Photoshop or Adobe Camera Raw (not sure it can be updated separately) to ACR version 5.4 or later, because D5000 was not supported in the previous versions of ACR.

No—normally you should not need to convert Nikon D5000 RAW files to DNG first. Photoshop opens supported RAW files through the Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) plug-in. The D5000 requires a newer ACR version; community answers indicate support starts with ACR 5.4 or later. If your current Photoshop/ACR version is older, the files may not open until you update the Camera Raw plug-in or Photoshop itself. Converting to DNG is mainly a workaround when your installed Adobe software is too old to support that camera’s RAW format directly.
