Why won't Photoshop CS5 open RAW (.NEF) files from a Nikon D3100?

I'm trying to edit RAW photos from my Nikon D3100 in Photoshop CS5, but the .NEF files won't open. Is there an update or workaround that will let CS5 read these files?

Have you updated Adobe Camera Raw? Run Adobe Application Manager; the D3100 is a fairly new camera and it's likely that your version of ACR doesn't support it yet.

Photoshop CS5 relies on Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) to open RAW files, and your Nikon D3100 may not be supported by the ACR version currently installed. First, update Adobe Camera Raw using Adobe Application Manager. That update is free.

If updating ACR still doesn’t solve it, use the free Adobe DNG Converter to convert your Nikon .NEF files to .DNG. DNG is Adobe’s more universal RAW format and is often the best workaround when a camera is newer than the RAW support built into your Photoshop/ACR version.

In short: update Camera Raw first; if CS5 still won’t read the files, convert the NEFs to DNG and edit those instead.
