My Sony A58 RAW files won’t open in Photoshop CS6 because I’m currently using Camera Raw 7.1. Is there a compatible Camera Raw update for the A58, or should I convert the files to another format first?

According to Adobe's Camera Raw Supported Cameras page, the A58 requires Camera Raw version 7.4

According to their Compatible Adobe applications page, CS5 only supports ACR plugin version 6 (6.0-6.7). Are you using CS6? If so, should be able to update camera raw as high as version 8.71, according to that page.

Yes. The Sony A58 requires Adobe Camera Raw 7.4 or later, so Camera Raw 7.1 is too old to support its RAW files. If you’re using Photoshop CS6, you should be able to update Camera Raw beyond 7.1, so updating the plug-in is the first thing to try. If updating Camera Raw isn’t possible or doesn’t solve it, use the Adobe DNG Converter to convert the A58 RAW files to DNG, then open those in Photoshop CS6.
