Why won't Lightroom 5 detect my Nikon D800 for tethered capture on Windows 8?

Lightroom 5 tethered capture stopped working with a Nikon D800 on a Windows 8 laptop after previously working normally. Windows still shows the camera under Portable Devices in Device Manager, but Lightroom does not detect it. Different USB ports, cables, and even another D800 were tested, and the same tether setup works on a Mac. Restarting the laptop did not help. What settings or fixes should I try to restore tethered capture?

My first guess is that a Windows update installed between the last time the system worked as expected and the first time things didn't work is the culprit. Your comment above confirms this.

If you can't keep Windows rolled back then you may want to contact Adobe and let them know of the incompatibility. The more complaints/reports they get regarding an issue the more likely they are to develop an update for LR5 that fixes the problem from the application side.

Likely causes are a Windows/driver change or a USB connection mode issue rather than the camera itself.

Based on the reported fixes, the most effective step was changing the laptop’s USB port setting from USB 3.0 to USB 2.0 compatibility. Even if the cable is USB 3.0, Lightroom 5 tethering may behave better through a USB 2.0 mode/port on that system.

Other good checks:

  • Verify the camera is connecting in camera/tether mode, not just as a storage device.
  • Toggle any shooting/display modes that may affect USB behavior, such as Live View.
  • Power-cycle everything: shut down the computer, turn off the camera, remove the battery briefly, then reconnect.
  • If the problem started suddenly, check whether a recent Windows update changed USB or device-driver behavior.

If rolling back the update is not practical and the issue persists, report it to Adobe, since it may be an incompatibility between Lightroom 5 and a Windows update or driver state.
