I tried connecting a Sony A57 to Lightroom for tethered capture, but Lightroom does not detect the camera. Does the A57 support tethered shooting at all, either in Lightroom or with other software over USB?

It is impossible with Lightroom as the camera is not supported. See the supported list.
You will have to find other tethering software and check their requirements one-by-one. As a general rule, if your camera is neither Canon nor Nikon, there are far less chances of being supported by anyone else than the manufacturer. So, check with Sony first, they may have software for that at an additional cost. While it is probably possible to implement, it may be the case that it just has not been for this camera.

No. The Sony A57 is not supported for tethered capture in Lightroom, and Sony’s own support information indicates that remote camera control over USB is not supported for the A57/SLT-A5x series. That means this is not just a Lightroom limitation: USB tethering and computer control are generally unavailable on this camera model. In practice, searching for third-party tethering software is unlikely to help if the camera itself does not support remote USB control. If tethered shooting is essential, you would need a camera model that explicitly supports tethered or remote shooting.
