Can a Panasonic DMC-FZ100 be remotely controlled from a computer over USB?

I want to control a Panasonic DMC-FZ100 from a computer and trigger still-image capture over USB. The camera appears to support PTP, but gPhoto2 reports an unsupported operation, and libptp also fails. Is there any software that can do tethered shooting or remote capture with this camera? Linux would be ideal, but Windows is also an option.

As I understand it, that camera does not offer that feature via any software. I did a little looking on gphoto2 forums, and in general it seems Panasonic's support for the PTP protocol used for USB communication is very rudimentary, on pretty much all of their compact camera models. So, basically: sorry, can't really be done.

Support appears to be very limited. Based on the reported gPhoto2/libptp failures and community experience, Panasonic’s USB/PTP implementation on compact models like the FZ100 does not generally provide full remote-control or tethered-capture functions, so on Linux this is unlikely to work.

One community answer notes that a recent version of Phase One Capture One lists the FZ100 as supported for tethered shooting, so Windows or another supported desktop platform may be your best chance if you need computer control.

In short: Linux tools such as gPhoto2 are unlikely to remote-control the FZ100 over USB, but Capture One may be worth trying on a supported OS.
