I want to control a Canon EOS DSLR from a computer and trigger shots remotely over USB, not just download photos. Windows support is the main priority (XP, Vista, or Windows 7), but other OS options are also useful. Is tethered/remote capture possible, and what software is typically used?

If you're on Windows, then you'd use the "EOS Utility" application (which you can download from Canon if you haven't already got it).

This application supports:

  • Functions for downloading and displaying images
  • Remote shooting, and camera control of each setting when an EOS DIGITAL camera is connected to a computer

Yes. Many Canon EOS DSLRs support remote or tethered shooting over USB.

On Windows, the usual solution is Canon EOS Utility, which comes with Canon’s software and supports remote shooting, image download, and camera setting control when a compatible EOS camera is connected.

Another Canon option mentioned is EOS Capture as part of Digital Photo Professional (DPP), installed from the camera software disc and then updated.

If you use Adobe Lightroom 3, tethered capture may also work there for supported models such as the EOS 400D.

On Linux and macOS, gphoto2 is another option and is known to support the EOS 400D.

So if Windows currently only shows the camera as a device for downloading files, that usually means you need Canon’s tethering software rather than relying on the default OS import behavior.
