I’m trying to find out whether the Olympus PEN E-PL3 supports tethered shooting with a computer for studio work. I’m mainly interested in whether the camera can be controlled from a computer to capture images, and I’m open to third-party software if Olympus doesn’t provide this directly.

This is not supported by Olympus and I know of no third-party software to control the E-PL3.
You can see the Live-View display on HDMI which means you can see what its doing but you cannot control the camera to take pictures.

Based on the available information, the Olympus PEN E-PL3 does not support tethered shooting control from a computer. Olympus does not provide this feature for the E-PL3, and no third-party control software was identified for it either.
The camera can output its live view over HDMI, so you may be able to monitor the scene on an external display, but that is not the same as true tethering. In other words, you can view what the camera sees, but you cannot remotely control the camera or trigger captures from the computer.
