On my Canon EOS 650D, the usual autofocus icon no longer appears on screen. How can I get it back? I may have changed a setting by accident. What should I check on the camera or lens?

This will happen if your lens is set to manual focus (check the AF/MF switch on your lens) or in the case when the lens you're using doesn't support autofocus. A third possibility is that your lens, or the lens mount, has been damaged and is no longer communicating correctly with the camera.

Of these, the first is probably by far the most common.

The most likely cause is that the lens has been switched to manual focus. Check the AF/MF switch on the lens and make sure it is set to AF.

If the lens is already in AF, a few other things could explain it:

  • You may be seeing the manually selected focus point or spot AF box instead of the usual AF icon. Try pressing the AF button and check the autofocus area mode.
  • The lens may not support autofocus, especially if it is a third-party lens or used with an adapter.
  • There could be a communication problem between the lens and camera, such as dirty contacts or damage to the lens or mount.

Start by checking the lens switch first, since that is the most common reason. If needed, then review the AF area settings on the camera and confirm the lens is fully compatible and mounted correctly.
