Canon Rebel T3i won’t shoot with 18-55mm lens in autofocus mode

My Canon Rebel T3i works normally with the 55-250mm lens, but with the 18-55mm kit lens it won’t take a photo when the lens is set to AF. If I switch that lens to manual focus, the camera will shoot. I’m new to the camera and may have changed a setting by accident. What should I check before returning or exchanging it?

Troubleshooting a lens:

Lens

  • Toggle: Make sure the toggle on the lens is firmly in the AF position.
  • Contacts: Check the metal contacts on the lens to make sure they are clear of debris and are clean.
  • Ring: Make sure the focus ring isn't obstructed. It should move freely when on MF and become more firm when on AF (for your lens, not all lenses do this).

Camera

  • AF Setting: Select center point focus (this is your most accurate point of focus on the T3i) and attempt to focus via viewfinder)
  • If you have a confirmed focus (beep or solid red light in the VF), then the problem is in the camera.
  • Attempt to focus via live-view. If this works, then the problem is in the camera's phase AF (live-view uses a different, more basic system) and the lens and contacts are fine or the shooting environment.

Environment

If the camera legitimately cannot find a focus when on AF mode, it will not fire. This is usually caused by the camera not being able to determine distance to the subject. A solid color wall, or a very dark environment can cause this. This can also be caused by being outside of the focus range of the lens (usually too close).

Since the camera works with your 55-250mm lens, the issue is most likely with the 18-55mm lens or its connection rather than a general camera setting. Check these things first:

  • Make sure the lens AF/MF switch is fully set to AF.
  • Remove and remount the lens so it seats properly.
  • Inspect the lens contacts and camera contacts for dirt or debris.
  • Make sure the focus ring/front of the lens isn’t stuck or obstructed.
  • Try using only the center AF point through the viewfinder and see if you get focus confirmation.
  • Try autofocus in Live View. If Live View focuses but the viewfinder does not, that suggests a phase-detect AF issue.
  • As a basic reset, remove the battery and memory card for a moment, then reinstall them.

If the 18-55 still only works in manual focus after those checks, exchanging the kit lens or camera kit is reasonable.
