I’m buying a Canon Rebel T4i with the EF-S 18-55mm kit lens and the EF-S 55-250mm lens. What size polarizing filter do I need, and can one filter be used on both lenses?

The standard Canon Rebel T4i Kit comes with the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II Lens. This lens uses a 58mm filter size.
The Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS Lens also happens to use a 58mm filter.
So you are in luck, because both lenses will utilize a 58mm polarizing filter.

You need a 58mm polarizing filter. Both the Canon EF-S 18-55mm and EF-S 55-250mm lenses use a 58mm filter thread, so one 58mm filter will fit both lenses.
If you’re buying a polarizer for a DSLR with autofocus and metering, a circular polarizer is generally the right type. One thing to be aware of: these lenses have a front element that rotates while focusing, which can make a polarizer a bit fiddly to use because you may need to readjust the filter after focus changes.
