Which Rebel T3i kit is better for sports: 55-250mm IS or 75-300mm III?

I'm comparing two Canon EOS Rebel T3i kits for shooting sports from a distance. Both include the EF-S 18-55mm IS II, but one comes with the EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS and the other comes with the EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III. Which telephoto lens is the better choice for sports and long-distance shooting?

The EF 75-300 f/4-5.6 III will get you a little closer, but the EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS is better optically and has Image Stabilization which will help in certain situations. While it is true that IS is primarily for dealing with camera movement issues, the Mode 2 IS option of the 55-250 is very helpful for doing horizontal panning shots at slower than normal shutter speeds for typical action shots.

For a much more detailed comparison of the EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III vs. the EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS see Canon 75-300mm f4-5.6 USM or 55-250mm f4-5.6 IS lens?

For most buyers, the T3i kit with the EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS is the better choice. Although the 75-300mm reaches a bit farther, the 55-250mm is generally considered optically better and includes Image Stabilization, which helps with camera shake.

For sports, IS does not freeze subject motion, but it can still help in some situations. The 55-250mm’s Mode 2 IS is useful for panning shots, where you follow the action horizontally at slower shutter speeds.

So the tradeoff is:

  • 75-300mm III: slightly more reach
  • 55-250mm IS: better image quality and stabilization

If your priority is overall results and usability, choose the 55-250mm IS kit. If you only care about getting a little more zoom and accept weaker optics and no IS, the 75-300mm is the longer lens.
