Why is Lightroom importing 2023 photos into my last 2022 folder?

When I import new photos into Lightroom, images from 2023 are being placed inside the last folder from 2022 instead of creating or using the correct 2023 folder. I’ve been moving them manually afterward, but I’d like to fix the cause. Why does this happen, and what import setting should I check? Camera: Sony A7 IV.

When importing ensure the folder above the 2023 and 2022 folder is selected as the top folder. Lightroom will then import the dated folders into the correct year.
I suspect in you example you selected the folder 2022-12-10 before importing. Lightroom went ahead and created the desired folder structure of YYYY/YYYY-MM-DD under that folder.

This usually happens because the wrong destination folder is selected during import.
In Lightroom, make sure you choose the parent folder above your year folders as the import destination, not a specific dated folder from 2022. If you select a folder like 2022-12-10, Lightroom can create its normal date-based structure (YYYY/YYYY-MM-DD) underneath that folder, which makes 2023 images end up inside the 2022 branch.
To fix it, set the destination to the top-level folder that contains both your 2022 and 2023 folders. Then Lightroom should place imported files into the correct year/date folder automatically.
Your camera model isn’t the cause here; this is an import destination/folder structure issue.
