Why does Lightroom put imported photos into the next day's folder when organizing by date?

When importing directly from several cameras into Lightroom 4.3 using date-based folders, photos shot in the afternoon are being placed into the following day's folder. I'm in Hong Kong (UTC+8), and both my computer and camera clocks are set correctly. In Lightroom's import dialog, the capture time appears exactly 8 hours ahead, but after import the EXIF time shows correctly. This happens on multiple cameras and on two Windows 7 computers. If I first copy the files to the hard drive and then import them into Lightroom, the dates are correct. Why is this happening, and is there a fix or workaround?

As I just found out, this is a bug in Lightroom, more than a year old, but still not fixed. Please see this thread on the support forums where an employee of Adobe confirmed the bug to be linked to the USB connection with the camera. They also recommend to use a card reader instead of the USB connection.

This appears to be a Lightroom bug related to importing over a direct USB camera connection. The clue is that Lightroom shows the capture time 8 hours ahead in the import dialog, but the EXIF is correct after import, and copying files to the hard drive first avoids the problem.

What to check:

  • Make sure your computer clock is set to the correct local time.
  • Make sure each camera is also set to local time.

If those are correct, the practical workaround is:

  • import using a card reader instead of connecting the camera by USB, or
  • copy the files to your hard drive first, then import into Lightroom.

So the issue is likely not your camera times, but Lightroom misinterpreting the time/date during direct camera import.
