Can Lightroom auto-import tethered photos from EOS Utility subfolders?

I’m tethering with Canon EOS Utility and using Lightroom Auto Import so images appear in Lightroom as I shoot. This works if EOS Utility saves everything into one watched folder, but I prefer dated subfolders.

What I found:

  • If EOS Utility creates subfolders inside the monitored folder, Lightroom’s built-in Auto Import ignores the images in those subfolders.
  • Lightroom Auto Import doesn’t offer the same dated-subfolder destination options as the normal Import dialog.
  • Lightroom’s own tethered capture options are too limited for my workflow.

Is there a workaround that lets Lightroom pick up images from a folder tree or subfolders while shooting tethered with EOS Utility?

Jeffrey Friedl's Folder Watch plugin appears to be designed to provide the functionality you want:

This plugin attempts to fill deficiencies in Lightroom's built-in Auto-Import facilities, allowing you to auto-import images in place, in a folder or a whole tree of folders. It's likely of most use to those who shoot tethered.

It is donationware, with a $0.01 minimum donation for full functionality.

Lightroom’s built-in Auto Import only watches a single folder, not subfolders, so your results are expected.

A commonly suggested workaround is Jeffrey Friedl’s Folder Watch plugin. It’s designed to address Lightroom Auto Import limitations by watching a folder tree and importing images from subfolders, which makes it useful for tethered workflows like EOS Utility creating dated folders.

So if you want EOS Utility to keep making subfolders and still have Lightroom pull images in automatically, a folder-watching plugin is the practical solution.
