Why does Windows 10 stop seeing photos when I connect my camera by USB?

When I connect my camera to a Windows 10 64-bit PC, the computer initially detects the camera and shows the correct number of photos. But during import, the camera display goes blank and Windows then reports that no pictures are available. The same camera works correctly with Windows 7, and the SD card works fine if I remove it and use it elsewhere. What should I check, and is there a reliable workaround?

I have used Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 10. I have never used the Picture Import utility. I eject SD cards from the camera and copy and paste them manually where I want them to go 1st) to local drive preferred and 2nd to external hard drive.
As I do not work from cards. As soon as the copy routine is done, I eject the card.
I use Adobe Lightroom and when I am done exporting images out of Lightroom they get copied over to the external hard drive as well.

This points to a Windows/camera connection or driver issue rather than a problem with the photos or SD card.
Based on the answers, try these steps:
- Check that the camera’s USB/device drivers are installed correctly in Windows 10.
- If the maker doesn’t offer a Windows 10 driver, an older driver (such as a Vista-era driver from the manufacturer) may work for some cameras.
- Try Windows’ built-in Import option after the camera is detected.
- The most reliable workaround is to remove the SD card and copy the files with a card reader, or manually copy files from the card instead of importing directly from the camera.
Since the card works normally in other devices and on Windows 7, the images themselves are likely fine. In many cases, using the memory card directly is simpler and more dependable than connecting the camera over USB.
