After a recent update, I’m seeing banding in Photoshop that I don’t notice in Lightroom. Previously I sometimes saw it in Lightroom’s Library module, but not in Photoshop. Is this likely a Photoshop display setting or rendering shortcut, and how can I tell whether the banding is real?

What you may be seeing is fake banding created by Photoshop. It takes shortcuts to display layered files more quickly that sometime affect the actual appearance of the image on the screen. To check to see if there is actual banding, you can either zoom into the image to 100% or temporarily flatten the image to remove the layers. If what you are seeing is a Photoshop artifact, it should go away under these conditions.
For a very thorough description of banding (including the long version of this explanation) Greg Benz has posted an article on his website. You can find it here: No you Really Don't Have Banding in your Photo

This is often a Photoshop display artifact rather than true image banding. Photoshop can use preview shortcuts when displaying layered files, and those shortcuts may make smooth gradients look banded on screen even when the actual image data is fine.
To check whether the banding is real:
- Zoom to 100%.
- Or temporarily flatten the image/remove layers.
If the banding disappears at 100% or after flattening, it was likely just Photoshop’s preview/rendering behavior, not actual banding in the file.
So this usually isn’t a single “button” you accidentally changed in Lightroom vs. Photoshop. It’s more about how Photoshop previews complex layered images on screen.
