Why does my Olympus mju zoom 105 rewind a film roll after only a few shots?

My Olympus mju zoom 105 point-and-shoot used to work normally, but lately when I load a new roll it rewinds automatically after only about 6 exposures. The camera had worked fine on earlier rolls. What could cause a compact film camera to think the roll is finished so early?

Had the same problem once with 135 film and a Canon EOS 300v.

Turns out, that:

  • the battery was quite low (and old)
  • it was winter-time outside with -5 °C
  • and some idiot (me) had the habit of tightening the film before putting it into the camera.

I did so for years with manually winded cameras. But the electronics measured maybe to much needed force and therefore decided to wind back.

The most likely cause is the camera sensing too much film-advance resistance and assuming the roll is finished.

Common reasons mentioned:

  • weak or old batteries
  • film loaded incorrectly or not winding cleanly onto the take-up spool
  • extra tension in the film path or winding mechanism
  • over-tightening the film before loading
  • film cartridges/rolls that are unusually tight or overfilled
  • cold weather, which can increase resistance

What to try:

  1. Replace the battery first.
  2. Load a fresh, standard commercially loaded 35mm roll carefully and make sure it catches straight.
  3. Don’t pre-tighten the film before inserting it.
  4. If possible, test indoors at normal room temperature.

If it still rewinds after a few frames with fresh batteries and properly loaded film, the winding mechanism may have excessive drag or a fault and likely needs professional service.
