Olympus OM-10: film leader still out after rewinding

I rewound my first roll of 35mm film in an Olympus OM-10, but when I opened the back the film leader was still attached to the take-up spool and about 6 inches of film was outside the cartridge. I had pressed the rewind release and felt some resistance while rewinding. Is this normal, did I just not rewind far enough, and is the roll ruined now?

The cartridge is fine. Remember, when you get the cartridge, the leader is already exposed, so the film canister is designed to allow the film to come out without exposing the roll to light.
You may have ruined a photo or so, but when you load the film, you are supposed to load until both top and bottom take-up teeth are engaged, so thats essentially what you have exposed here, so perhaps not.
I suspect you just didn't rewind enough. You should continue winding until there is no resistance: its a noticeable change.

The roll is probably fine. On 35mm film, the leader normally sticks out of the cartridge before loading, so the canister is designed to protect the rest of the roll from light. If only about 6 inches were still out, you may lose the first frame or two, but the rest of the film should be okay.
Most likely, you simply stopped rewinding too soon. On manual film cameras, keep rewinding until the feel changes noticeably and the leader pulls free from the take-up spool. Some resistance during rewinding is normal, especially near the end, but don’t force it harshly.
So: no, the cartridge is not ruined. Reloading also exposes a small amount of film at the start, so the portion you saw is usually the sacrificial part anyway. Next time, continue rewinding until the tension clearly releases.
