What causes cloudy or foggy photos from an Olympus MJU Zoom film camera?

I bought an Olympus MJU Zoom point-and-shoot film camera, and my first roll came back very cloudy. I tried a second roll to rule out bad film, and the results were similar. What are the most likely causes, and what should I check on the camera?

If the fog isn't completely uniform it could be light leaks.
A light leak will often to look exactly like what it is when scanned: a glare from somewhere outside the scene that's double-exposed on top and uneven because it has shadows in it. Sometimes it's the orange color of the film base and may have sprocket holes if it's near the takeup reel instead of the lens.
Please check the seals. There should be one around the window where you can see the film roll and another in the channel where the door meets the frame.
If the seals are foam instead of rubber they can often be cleaned-off and replaced.

A common cause is a light leak rather than a lens problem. If the fogginess is not perfectly uniform, leaked light can overlay the image and look like glare or haze. On scans it may appear uneven, sometimes orange from the film base, and in some cases you may even see sprocket-hole patterns if the leak is near the take-up side rather than the lens.
The first thing to check is the camera’s light seals. Look for seals around the back door, especially:
- around the film window on the door
- in the channel where the door closes against the camera body
If the camera uses old foam seals, they often deteriorate with age and can cause leaks. These can usually be cleaned off and replaced. So before assuming the lens needs service, inspect the door seals and film-back sealing areas carefully.
