Why did my Olympus point-and-shoot suddenly start taking blurry photos mid-roll?

I used an Olympus Stylus Zoom 115 DLX 35mm point-and-shoot and got back a roll where the first four photos were sharp, but nearly all the remaining shots were unfocused and blurry. What could cause a point-and-shoot to go out of focus partway through a roll, and is there anything I should check?

Did you cover the autofocus windows somehow accidentally (by your finger)?

Generated from our catalog & community — verify before relying on it.
If the first few frames were sharp and the rest were consistently blurry, two likely causes are:
- The autofocus window was blocked — on many point-and-shoot cameras, accidentally covering the AF sensor with a finger can cause focusing errors.
- The autofocus mechanism failed — since the first four frames were fine, it may have developed a fault between shots. With older compact film cameras, age-related issues like worn plastic parts or dried lubricants can cause this.
What to check:
- Make sure nothing is covering the autofocus window when shooting.
- Inspect the camera for anything stuck or damaged around the lens/AF area.
- Run another test roll if you want to confirm the issue.
If the problem repeats even when the AF window is clear, the camera likely needs repair. On an older compact like this, repair is often not economical compared with replacing the camera.
