Why does my Nikon D7000's remaining shots count change unpredictably?

On my Nikon D7000, using a formatted 4GB Lexar card, the top display shows about 274 remaining shots with JPEG Large selected. After taking several photos, the number does not decrease by exactly one per shot. For example, after 10 shots it may still be close to 274 instead of 264. Is something wrong with the camera, card, or settings?

That is normal.
The camera doesn't know how many images there is left, as images take up different amount of space depending on how much detail they contain. So the camera displays a guesstimate based on the free space on the card and an average size for images taken with your current settings.
If you take images with large areas of sky or other smooth areas (e.g. out of focus), you will see that the count decreases less than the number of images taken. If you take images full of details where everything is in focus, you might not even have room for the number of images that the camera initially estimated.

Nothing is wrong. The remaining shots display is only an estimate, not an exact counter.
With JPEG, each photo file can be a different size because compression depends on the scene. Simple images with smooth areas or blur often compress smaller, while highly detailed images compress larger. Because of that, the camera estimates how many more photos will fit based on available card space and typical or worst-case JPEG size for your current settings.
So after 10 shots, the count may drop by less than 10 if those files were small, or faster if the files are larger than average. This is normal behavior for JPEG shooting on the D7000 and similar cameras.
