Nikon shows [-E-] and stops recognizing the SD card while shooting

My Nikon intermittently stops recognizing the SD card after I've been shooting for a while. Instead of showing the remaining photo count, the camera suddenly displays "[-E-]". What should I check first to tell whether the problem is the SD card or the camera body?

First make sure the metal contacts on the card are clean, and reformat the card in the camera using the menu. I assume you've done these things but it doesn't hurt to double check.

Since you get the same behavior in both card slots, it seems likely the card is damaged. They are relatively cheap — get a new one, preferably a higher-end name brand. If you see trouble with another card, send the camera in for cleaning and repair.

Start with the simplest checks: clean the card’s metal contacts and reformat the card in the camera menu. If the problem continues, the most likely cause is a failing or damaged SD card. Replacing it with a good-quality name-brand card is the next step.

If you test with another card and the same issue still happens, then the camera is the more likely culprit, and it may need cleaning or service. In short: reformat and clean first, then try a different SD card; if the error remains, have the camera checked.
