Why does my Canon Rebel T7 change shutter speed after each shot in Manual mode?

I'm new to photography and using a Canon EOS Rebel T7 in Manual mode. If I set the shutter speed to something like 1/30s and take a photo, the next similar shot seems to use a different shutter speed and I have to set it again. Is there a setting that will keep the shutter speed fixed until I change it manually?

Turn off Auto Exposure Bracketing (AEB) under the 'Shooting 2' (Red Tab 2) Menu → 'Expo.comp./AEB' setting.

You can also access Exposure Compensation/AEB settings via the 'Quick Control Screen' by pressing the 'Q' button.

It's covered on pages 116-119 of the EOS Rebel T7/1500D Instruction Manual

Yes — in Manual mode, the shutter speed should stay where you set it until you change it. If it keeps shifting after each shot, a likely cause is Auto Exposure Bracketing (AEB) being turned on.

On the Rebel T7, check:

  • Menu → Shooting 2 (red tab) → Expo.comp./AEB
  • Make sure AEB is disabled/reset

You can also reach this from the Quick Control screen by pressing the Q button and selecting Exposure Compensation/AEB.

When AEB is enabled, the camera takes a sequence of shots at different exposure settings, which can make it seem like shutter speed is changing on its own. Once AEB is off, your manually selected shutter speed should remain fixed until you adjust it yourself.
