Why can’t I change aperture in Manual mode on my Canon EOS 5D Mark II?

On my Canon EOS 5D Mark II, I can change shutter speed in Manual mode, but the aperture stays fixed at f/6.3. The camera works normally in Av and Tv modes. The power switch is set to the position that should enable the rear Quick Control Dial. What setting or issue could cause this?

As you wrote that “it works correctly in both AV and TV modes”, where only one value is changed at a time, the following might work:

In full manual mode (»M«), to change the shutter speed, you use the rotating dial on the top right of the camera whereas for the aperture, you use the large dial to the right of the display. To be able to use that dial, the on-off-switch has to be set to the position above “on” which has a pointing line on top of it which leads to the dial.

As you stated that “[t]he power switch is in the correct position”, the above should work. If it still doesn’t, please check whether the dial works in other scenarios such as flickering through your images. If it doesn’t—while the power switch is in the correct state—please contact Canon or others for repair.

You can also find an explanation of how to change the settings in the manual that can be found on Canon’s support page for the EOS 5D Mark 2

On the EOS 5D Mark II in Manual mode, shutter speed and aperture are controlled by different dials:

  • Top dial: shutter speed
  • Rear Quick Control Dial: aperture

So if shutter speed changes but aperture does not, first make sure you’re turning the large rear dial and that the power switch is in the upper position that enables that dial.

If the switch is already set correctly and the rear dial still won’t change aperture, test whether that dial works elsewhere, such as scrolling through playback images or menu items. If it also fails there, the most likely cause is a problem with the rear control dial or its enable switch, rather than a camera setting.

Since Av and Tv modes each change only one exposure setting at a time, they can still appear to work normally even if the rear dial has an issue.

If the rear dial doesn’t respond in other functions either, the next step is service or repair through Canon or a qualified camera repair shop.
