Why does my Canon G1 X change shutter speed in Tv mode for indoor sports?

I use a Canon G1 X for indoor basketball and want to keep a fast shutter speed to freeze action. In shutter priority (Tv) mode, I set something like 1/500s and expect the camera to adjust aperture and ISO. However, in low light the camera sometimes drops the shutter speed dramatically, even down to 1/30s. Auto ISO also seems capped lower than values I can set manually. Is there a setting that makes the camera override my chosen shutter speed, and can I stop it from doing that?

If you have "Safety Shift" enabled the camera will behave as you describe. To stop the camera from changing the shutter speed when there isn't enough light please disable "Safety Shift."

Yes. On the Canon G1 X, this behavior can be caused by Safety Shift being enabled.

Safety Shift lets the camera override your selected exposure setting when it thinks a correct exposure can’t be achieved with the current limits. In Tv mode, that can mean the camera lowers your chosen shutter speed in low light instead of strictly keeping 1/500s.

If you want the camera to respect the shutter speed you set, disable Safety Shift in the menu. Then the camera should keep your selected shutter speed rather than dropping to something like 1/30s.

If the scene is still too dark after that, you’ll need to accept underexposure, raise ISO manually, open the aperture as much as possible, or add more light.
