Why does my Canon 80D show “Lock” when I try to change aperture?

My Canon 80D suddenly won’t let me change the aperture with the normal control dial. When I try, “Lock” appears in red. This started after I used the built-in pop-up flash. I’ve tried the PASM exposure modes, and the only way I can change aperture is through the Q menu. What causes this, and how do I turn it off?

The Multifunction Lock switch at the bottom right of the back panel allows you to lock the main dial, quick control dial, multi-controller, and touch control, from accidental changes. When in the 'up' position, the controls do not change any settings, "Lock" will be displayed in live view, and 'L' will be displayed in the view finder and top screen.

You can selectively choose whether each of those 4 controls are affected by the Multifunction Lock switch in the settings menu. See p. 54 of the 80D User Manual for details.

Your 80D’s Multifunction Lock is likely turned on. When that lock switch is engaged, the camera can prevent the main dial, quick control dial, multi-controller, or touch controls from changing settings. On the 80D, this can make “Lock” appear and stop normal aperture adjustment, even though you may still be able to change it through the Q menu.

Check the lock switch on the back of the camera (bottom-right area). If it’s in the lock/on position, move it back. That should restore normal dial control.

You can also customize which controls the Multifunction Lock affects in the camera menu, so if this happened accidentally, review those settings in the 80D menu or manual.
