Why is my Yongnuo YN568EX stuck in E-TTL and won’t switch to manual?

My Yongnuo YN568EX suddenly switched from manual to E-TTL during an event and now it keeps returning to E-TTL whenever I try to change it. I’ve tried changing the mode both on the flash and through my Canon 7D’s flash menu, but manual mode won’t stay selected. It also won’t enter manual mode even when the flash is off the camera. The flash otherwise still fires normally. What should I check to fix this?

Just had the same issue with it flashing at 14mm. Turns out the diffuser was not pushed back in far enough until it clicks. All sorted now!

A few things can cause this on a YN568EX:

  • Check the wide panel/diffuser. One user found the flash was stuck showing 14mm and wouldn’t behave normally until the pull-out diffuser was pushed fully back in until it clicked.
  • If you’re using YN622 triggers, mode may need to be changed from the camera’s Speedlite control / flash function menu rather than only on the flash. With multiple units, make sure flash groups are set correctly (for example A:B or A:B:C).
  • If it still won’t leave E-TTL even off-camera, try a reset: remove the batteries for a few minutes and restore default settings.

If none of those steps work, the flash may have a fault or be electronically stuck in E-TTL. At that point, repair or replacement is the likely next step.
