Canon EOS 7D quick control dial stopped working

On my Canon EOS 7D, the rear quick control dial suddenly stopped responding when I turn it. The camera is out of warranty, and I was wondering whether this is a known issue and if it makes sense to open the camera to clean under the dial.

Make sure you have the Lock switch (located below the Quick Dial Wheel) set in the "off" position, lined up with the white line on the back.

Generated from our catalog & community — verify before relying on it.
First check the Lock switch directly below the Quick Control Dial. If it is enabled, the rear dial will not respond. Set the switch to the unlocked position, aligned with the white mark on the back of the camera.
Because the provided answer points to the lock switch as the cause, that is the first and safest thing to verify before considering any disassembly. Opening the camera to clean under the dial is not recommended unless you are experienced with camera repair, since it can cause further damage.
