Why do in-camera filter effects disappear when importing RAW files into Aperture 3?

I used some built-in creative filters on a Panasonic Lumix DMC-G10, such as monochrome, but after importing the images into Aperture 3 the effect is gone and the photo looks normal again. For example, a monochrome shot imports in full color. I’m not applying any adjustments on import, and I’m shooting RAW only. Is this expected behavior, and is there a way to keep those in-camera filter effects when importing?

RAW images are straight from the sensor, no processing included. These effect filters on your camera would only apply to jpeg.

Yes — this is expected if you shot RAW. RAW files contain mostly unprocessed sensor data, so in-camera creative filters like monochrome are generally not baked into the RAW image. Those effects are typically applied only to JPEGs made by the camera.

When Aperture imports the RAW file, it develops the original sensor data itself, so it ignores the camera’s filter rendering and shows the full-color image unless you convert it to monochrome in software.

If you want to keep the camera’s built-in filter look, shoot JPEG or RAW+JPEG. Then the JPEG will include the filter effect, while the RAW file remains editable and unfiltered.

So:

  • RAW only: filter effects usually won’t carry over
  • JPEG: filter effects are preserved
  • RAW+JPEG: you get both versions
