I’m new to this camera and want to buy filters for a Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ20. Does the lens have a filter thread, and if not, is there any practical way to use a filter on it?

You have to look for the ø symbol in the objective or the number behind the frontal cup of your camera. However the simplest thing to do is to use a ruler and measure from the inner edge of your camera. Take the maximum diameter you'll find and than search for the filter that most fit the measure. If you post a photo with a ruler near the objective I can measure it for you.

The Lumix DMC-LZ20 does not have a front filter thread, so there isn’t a standard screw-in filter size to buy for the lens itself.

Normally, filter size is marked with a ø symbol on the front of a lens, but on this camera there is no threaded mount for standard filters. That means you can’t attach a normal screw-in filter in the usual way.

If you still want to experiment, the only options mentioned are improvised ones, such as holding a filter in front of the lens or taping one to the outer front of the lens area. These workarounds are awkward and can cause problems like vignetting, especially at the wide end of the zoom, and may interfere with the lens cap.

So the practical answer is: there is no standard filter diameter for the LZ20 because the lens does not support screw-in filters.
