Can step-up or step-down rings be used for reverse lens macro mounting?

I want to reverse-mount a lens for macro, but my lens filter thread size does not match the reverse adapter I have. Can I use a step-up or step-down ring between the lens and the reverse adapter, and are there any practical disadvantages compared with using a reverse adapter in the exact thread size?

I'm using a '49mm-52mm Step-Up Ring' and a '52mm Macro Reverse Adapter Ring for Pentax K' to reverse mount my SMC PENTAX-A 1:2 50mm lens which has a 49mm filter thread. It's working great and I don't see any disadvantage. Of course it would be cheaper and simpler to use a '49mm Macro Reverse Adapter' but I was unable to find one in the local store (many years ago).

Yes. A step-up or step-down ring can be used between the lens’s filter thread and a reverse-mount adapter, as long as the thread sizes are compatible and everything fits securely. In practice, this is a normal workaround when the exact reverse adapter size is hard to find.

The main downside is usually just convenience: using extra rings adds another connection, making the setup slightly bulkier and a bit less simple than using a reverse adapter in the correct size directly. Otherwise, there is no inherent problem with doing it, and photographers do use this successfully for reversed-lens macro setups.

As with any reverse-mount arrangement, make sure the adapter and rings attach cleanly and hold the lens firmly.
