Should I correct barrel distortion before stitching a panorama in Microsoft ICE?

I shot a panorama as more than 100 images on a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ5 at 6mm (about 36mm equivalent). The source images show noticeable barrel distortion, which I can correct in PTLens before stitching.

Does Microsoft ICE apply lens distortion correction or use a lens database? I want to avoid correcting twice. Is it better to stitch the original images first, or pre-correct barrel distortion before importing them into ICE?

No, MS ICE does not have a lens database AFAIK. It really does not matter much since it has to distort the images to make features match and perform blending. In my experience success is generally high but not perfect. I would try straight with ICE first because any processing you do before hand always adds image quality loss. If it fails, then try it after correcting. Remember that when correcting barrel distortion you loose part of the image, so there will be less overlap for MS ICE to work with.

Microsoft ICE generally does not use a lens database for automatic barrel-distortion correction. In practice, ICE already warps images as part of alignment and blending, so mild lens distortion often isn’t a problem.

A good approach is to try stitching the original files in ICE first. Pre-correcting in another program can reduce image quality slightly and may crop the frame edges, which also reduces overlap between shots and can make stitching harder.

If ICE fails to stitch well, or if distortion is causing obvious problems, then try correcting the images first and stitch again. The key is to avoid unnecessary preprocessing unless the uncorrected files give poor results.
