When I review photos on a borrowed Olympus SLR, some dark areas flash black and white. I may have changed a setting by accident. What does this playback warning mean, and how can I turn it off?

You're in the mode of the camera where it shows you the over (or possibly under) exposed parts of your images. Its a useful mode, but if you'd like to exit, click the up or down arrow while you see that image to cycle through the viewing modes.

This is a playback exposure warning. The camera is highlighting areas that may have lost detail because of exposure, often called highlight/shadow warning or “zebra” in the manual. It’s not changing the photo itself—just the way the image is displayed during review.
On Olympus cameras, you can usually cycle playback display modes using the up or down arrow while viewing the image. That should switch off the flashing overlay. If needed, check the manual for playback display options or “zebra”/highlight-shadow warnings.
