How do I remove the histogram overlay from the playback screen on a Nikon D40?

On my Nikon D40, when I review photos on the rear screen, I see a rectangle with yellow wave-like lines that partly covers the image. I’m new to the camera and may have pressed something by accident. How can I turn this off and get back to the normal photo display?

The only thing that comes to my mind would be the histogram:

Hit the 'play button' so you see the single image (with histogram). Then hit the 'up' or 'down' buttons on the wheel on the right side of the back of the camera.

That cycles through two information screens, histogram and regular display.

That overlay is most likely the playback histogram. It shows the brightness distribution of the image and can look like yellow “waves” in a box over the photo.

To switch back to the normal image display on a Nikon D40:

  1. Press the Play button to review an image.
  2. Use the up or down direction on the multi-selector (the control pad on the back).
  3. This cycles through the playback display modes, including the histogram screen and the regular full-image view.

You likely just changed the playback display accidentally. Nothing is wrong with the camera.
