I’m trying to find a flash for my Canon EOS 2000D (Rebel T7), but I’ve read that some versions of this camera have a limited hot shoe. Which speedlights are compatible, and are there any restrictions with Canon or third-party flashes?

Many of Canon's newer entry level cameras, including the EOS 2000D, lack a center hotshoe contact so they are not very flexible when it comes to a choice of flash.
All Canon "EX" flash units will be compatible because Canon uses ETTL information from the other contact pins to trigger the flash. Some third party ETTL flash units will be compatible, but they may need firmware updates. You will need to check with each third party manufacturer to be sure.
For example, Godox has firmware updates for the V860IIC, X1T-C, TT350C, and V350C that make them compatible with Canon cameras that lack a center contact pin in their hotshoes.

The EOS 2000D / Rebel T7 can be tricky because many copies were sold without the center hot-shoe sync pin. If your camera is missing that center contact, many basic manual flashes and simple non-TTL triggers will not fire.
What should work:
- Canon EX-series Speedlites, because they use Canon’s E-TTL contacts rather than the center pin.
- Some third-party Canon TTL flashes/triggers, but only if they specifically support the 2000D/T7 or have updated firmware.
- Godox Canon versions are commonly mentioned as compatible when updated to the latest firmware.
Important note:
- Some newer T7/2000D bodies may have the center sync contact restored. If yours has it, compatibility is much wider and most Canon-compatible flashes should work normally.
Best first step: check your camera’s hot shoe. If there is no center pin, shop for a Canon EX flash or a third-party Canon TTL flash/trigger confirmed by the maker to support the 2000D/T7.
