Can the Lytro Illum use any flash besides the dedicated Lytro TTL model?

I have a Lytro Illum light-field camera and want to add an external flash. Its hot shoe uses an unusual contact layout. Are there any compatible third-party flash options besides the dedicated Lytro version, or will other flashes only work in manual mode?

I don't think there's any other TTL option available to you other than finding the for-Lytro version of the Viltrox JY680 TTL, the JY680L, given that unusual pin/contact layout. Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, that flash has been discontinued, so you'll have to look for a used one. Your only options are going to be manual-only or flashes made for other brands of cameras which will only be able to be used in M mode without HSS, because the non-sync pin/contact won't exist or match, so the only thing your camera can do is to tell the flash to fire.

The Lytro Illum’s hot shoe appears to use a nonstandard contact layout, so full TTL compatibility is very limited. Based on the community answers, the only known TTL option is the Lytro-specific Viltrox JY680L. It has reportedly been discontinued, so you’d likely need to find one used.

Other flashes may still work, but only as basic manual flashes. In that case, the camera can trigger the flash to fire through the center sync contact, but brand-specific features such as TTL metering and high-speed sync generally will not work because the extra communication pins do not match the Lytro shoe layout.

So in practice:

  • TTL: likely only the Viltrox JY680L
  • Most other flashes: manual mode only
  • HSS and advanced flash communication: generally not supported with non-Lytro flashes
