Where should I send a Nikon D80 for repair after an “Err” message and autofocus failure?

My Nikon D80 had been working fine, but after sitting unused for about two months it now shows “Err” when I try to focus or take a photo. The shutter still fires, but autofocus does not seem to work. The same problem happens with two different lenses. I already cleaned the lens contacts and reset the camera, but it did not help.
Should I send it directly to Nikon or use an authorized local repair shop? I’d like the best balance of service, diagnosis, and cost, especially since the camera’s value may be close to the repair price.

Take it to Nikon. Check their website for a local repair and service centre, if there's nothing nearby you may need to post/courier it. Nikon may make some small fixes free of charge and aren't always as expensive as you fear.
Alternatively take it to a friendly camera shop as you've already realised.
Edit: Did you try charging the battery? You'll get similar problems with flat battery.

Start with Nikon support or a Nikon service center. Nikon can usually provide a quote before repair, and factory service is often the safest option for accurate diagnosis. In some cases, minor fixes may be inexpensive or even handled at low cost.
A local authorized repair shop is also a reasonable option, especially if you want something more convenient than shipping the camera.
Before sending it in, try the simple check mentioned in the answers: fully charge the battery. A weak battery can sometimes cause error behavior that looks like a more serious fault.
Given the age of the D80, it makes sense to get an estimate first and compare it with the camera’s current value. If Nikon’s quote is too high, you can then decide whether an independent/authorized shop or replacement makes more sense.
