How can I clear an "Err" message on a Nikon F75/N80 after a failed film load?

I tried loading film into my Nikon F75, but it didn’t catch properly and the camera showed an "Err" message. After removing that roll and trying a new one, the error remained and the camera would not attempt to load the film.

What should I check when loading film, and how can I get the camera to load properly again?

That happened to me from time to time with my N80. Each time I simply opened the back and checked that the film canister was inserted straight and the film leader was pulled out the right amount. Second time was always the charm. A few times I had the leader out too far (passed the little red dot) and had to take the film canister out roll the leader in a bit and try again.

I hope that works for you.

First, reopen the camera back and reload the film carefully. Make sure the canister is seated straight, and pull the film leader out only the correct amount. If the leader is pulled too far—past the alignment mark/red dot—the camera may not catch it correctly. In that case, rewind or roll the leader back in slightly and try again.

With these cameras, a failed load can trigger an error until the film is re-seated properly. A second careful attempt often fixes it.

Checklist:

  • open the back and remove the film
  • confirm the canister sits straight in the chamber
  • align the leader to the proper mark
  • do not pull the leader out too far
  • close the back and let the camera try loading again

If it still will not load after careful reloading, the issue may be mechanical and need service, but incorrect film placement is the first thing to rule out.
