Vivitar PS 120 won't auto-load or advance film

I have a Vivitar PS 120 focus-free motorized 35mm film camera. It was working recently, but now when I load film it does not auto-load/advance as it should. I have already replaced the batteries, and I do not have the owner's manual. Is there a common cause for this on this model, or anything specific I should check when loading film?

You might try checking to be sure the back cover latch is working as it should. You should hear a distinct "click" when you close the door and the latch button should return to the top position of its movement. The camera will not load the film until it can confirm that the back cover is closed.
Although not for your exact model, this manual is for very similar Vivitar cameras that have zoom instead of fixed focal length lenses. The instructions regarding film loading and battery replacement should be about the same for your PS:120. Not much help there for troubleshooting your problem, however.

A likely cause is that the camera is not detecting the back cover as fully closed. On cameras like the Vivitar PS 120, the motorized film load usually will not start unless the rear door latch is engaged properly.
Check these points:
- Close the back firmly and listen for a clear click.
- Make sure the latch button returns fully to its normal/top position after closing.
- Inspect the latch and door for anything preventing full closure.
- Confirm the batteries are installed correctly and have good charge.
If the door is not registering as closed, the camera may appear dead for film loading even with fresh batteries. A manual for a very similar Vivitar motorized model suggests the loading and battery steps are essentially the same, even if it is not the exact PS 120 manual.
If the latch is working and it still will not advance, the issue may be a mechanical or electrical fault in the film transport, which is common in older motorized compact film cameras.
